Doogie

Support

Doogie is a Markdown reader, editor, and library for Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro. Everything below applies to all four unless it says otherwise. If you're stuck on something this page doesn't cover, write to us.

Getting started

  1. Open a document. Press Open… in the Library, drop a Markdown file onto it, or open a .md file from Finder or the Files app and choose Doogie. The document opens and joins your Library.
  2. The Library lists everything you've opened or created, grouped by when you last touched it. Pin the ones you keep coming back to. The search field looks inside every document, not just at titles; choose a result to jump to that line.
  3. Reading. The sidebar lists the document's headings and follows you as you scroll. The floating bar at the bottom has smaller and larger text, Find in Document, and the Info panel, which holds the file details, sharing, exports, and folder access.
  4. Editing needs Doogie Pro. Tap the pencil to edit; Done saves and returns to reading. Rich Text and Markdown modes are a toggle on the editing bar, and you can switch as often as you like.

Your Documents Folder

New documents are created in your Documents Folder the moment you press New Document — no dialog, no naming step until you want one. Where that folder lives depends on the device:

Documents you open from elsewhere stay where they are; Doogie remembers the file, not a copy. Remove from Library forgets a document without deleting it. New Document In… (⇧⌘N) creates a single document in a folder of your choosing without changing the default.

Editing (Pro)

Two modes

Rich Text hides the Markdown syntax: headings look like headings, lists like lists, and the bar offers formatting the way a word processor does. Markdown shows the source with a live preview beside it (on iPhone the preview is a separate tab). Both edit the same text; switching modes never changes what is in the file.

Saving

Doogie saves as you type, and Done saves once more before returning to reading. Save As… writes a copy somewhere else and switches you to it; Duplicate… makes a copy in the same folder. Revert on the editing bar throws away everything since the document was last saved.

Find and replace

⌘F opens the find bar in any document. While editing it grows a Replace row: replace the current match or every match at once, with an option for case-sensitive matching.

Pictures and sketches

The insert menu on the editing bar takes photos from your library, a new photo from the camera (iPhone and iPad), or a sketch drawn by hand — Apple Pencil on iPad, your finger on iPhone, and a pinch-and-drag on Vision Pro. Doogie copies the image into the document's folder and writes an ordinary Markdown image reference, so the document still works in any other tool.

Word and PDF

Export as PDF… and Export as Word… are in the Info panel. Import Word Document… is in the Library's ⋯ menu; the result is a new Markdown document in your Library with headings, lists, links, and images carried across.

Troubleshooting

Images in a document show as broken or missing.

The images are referenced by a relative path, so they live in a folder next to the document, and Doogie can only read folders you've given it. Open the Info panel, choose Grant Folder Access…, and pick the folder that holds the document. That permission is remembered. Documents inside your Documents Folder never need it.

A banner says Doogie can't access a document's folder, or a save fails.

Access to a folder outside Doogie's own can lapse — after the folder is moved or renamed, after a restore from backup, or when the folder was on a drive that's no longer connected. Grant it again from the Info panel. If the document itself was moved or renamed outside Doogie, open it again from its new location; the old Library entry can then be removed.

A document I edited elsewhere isn't found by Library search.

Search reads the current contents of every document in the Library, and it re-reads any file that changed on disk since it was last indexed. If the file was replaced by another app while Doogie wasn't looking, open it once and it is re-indexed immediately.

Rich Text shows my table as raw Markdown.

That's a known limit of this version, listed above. Edit tables in Markdown mode, where the live preview renders them, or leave them alone in Rich Text — Doogie preserves them exactly as written.

I switched between Rich Text and Markdown and something changed.

Switching modes should never alter your text; if it does, that's a bug we want to know about. Revert (on the editing bar) restores the last saved version. Please send us the document, or the part of it that changed, at the address below.

I bought Pro but the app still asks me to unlock it.

Open the Pro screen and choose Restore Purchases. Pro is tied to the Apple ID that bought it, so make sure the device is signed in to the same one. Because Doogie is a single app across Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro, one purchase covers all of them.

Opening a document on the Mac replaced my Library window.

That's the normal flow: one window, with the Library button (⌘[) taking you back. To read two documents side by side, ⌘-click a document in the Library or choose ⋯ → Open in New Window.

Does deleting the app delete my documents?

Documents in folders you chose yourself are never touched. On iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro, deleting the app also deletes the Doogie folder in Files, so move anything you want to keep first. On the Mac, the container folder stays on disk until you remove it.

Email [email protected]. It helps to include the device and OS version, what you did, what you expected, and — for a document that renders or edits wrongly — the file itself or the part that misbehaves. Replies usually within a day or two.
